      • Aug 2012 - Jun 2016

As part of an interdisciplinary project funded by the USDA, I researched pollination security in four US crops: blueberries, apples, squash, and cranberries. The goal of the project was to identify strategies to mitigate the "pollination deficit" caused by the declining abundance and rising price of commercial honeybees. My particular task was to use social science methodologies to determine the obstacles to farmers adopting diversified pollination strategies, such as increased conservation of native bees, in order to secure adequate crop pollination. My dissertation examined farmers’ adoption of pollinator conservation practices through a comparative study of lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) growers in Maine, USA and Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada. Specifically, my research analyzed agricultural policy networks to better understand how federal, state, and local agricultural policies and programs serve as both bridges and barriers to sustainable agriculture.

As a field coordinator for RMYC, I trained and acted as support staff for six conservation crews working and living in the Colorado backcountry. All six crews were chainsaw crews that worked on cutting fire breaks and clearing public and private lands of hazards caused by the pine beetle epidemic. As part of this job, I also organized a mid-season rendezvous which brought together 140 people for one weekend, offering workshops, trainings, and community building.
