Theatre Department Counselor

I teach classes in acting for campers aged 7-11 and 12-15. My lesson plans for classes for ages 7-11 utilize different theatre games to build confidence and stage presence in front of an audience, using physicality to create a character, and spark a love for the stage. For classes for 12-15 year old students, my lesson plans are more specialized, focusing on improvised and devised scenework or traditional approaches to textual analysis. I created original content and incorporated submitted content for the English Department Twitter account to publicize department events and share faculty and student accomplishments to build community within the department. I also processed reimbursements for faculty expenses, assisted with maintaining archives of department scholarships, and designed and executed posters for department events using Canva. In this volunteer position, I taught workshops on sexual health, mental heath, and alcohol use to ninth-grade students across New York City and observed other educators while teaching and gave feedback on tactics for engaging with students. I also managed a group of 10-12 volunteers, which entailed leading weekly meetings to build a collective understanding about effective teaching strategies as well as systemic issues pertinent to teaching health education to primarily Black and Latinx high school students. With other members of the leadership council, I also led volunteer recruitment efforts, including outreach to underrepresented groups in volunteer corps. Show less
