Bio

Koen engages with students in his care in a manner that is genuinely wonderful to watch. His nature is one that lends itself to the younger age groups, but his capacity to work with older individuals is also impressive.

There are some people who just seem born to teach. Koen is in this rare category. I was fortunate enough to see Koen in action through twin lenses: as both a colleague in the primary at GEMS World Academy, Switzerland, and as a parent of a young student in his care. From both vantage points, Koen stood out as an exceptional person, worthy of any of the best schools. Koen is a true professional: his work rate and commitment are exceptional. However, more than that, he is a passionate advocate for the rights of children at this critical age. Koen was recognised for his example of how best to promote the natural curiosity, empathy and drive of children just starting out on their educational journey. As a colleague, I found Koen to be receptive to others’ ideas and articulate in philosophy and approach. As a parent, likewise I found him to be accessible, collaborative and encouraging. These same qualities that endeared him to his parent group and colleagues were in evidence every day with the children. My child was lucky enough to have Koen for two consecutive years. My wife and I are under no doubt whatsoever that the tremendous progress we witnessed in our son was in large measure due to the innovative, flexible and engaging teaching methods that Koen and his fine team employed. Equally, his caring, patient and nurturing manner brought out the best in our son and drove him to be his best every day. Our son frequently reminisces about his time with Koen and comments how much he loved his class. Those ‘born’ with the gifts that Koen possesses are not so common in our profession. Fortunately, the passion, drive and belief that Koen, and others like him, impart are sure to enrich a school far beyond the confines of his class. As is clear, I hold Koen in the highest regard and would unreservedly recommend him for any teaching post.
