The Belgian "North Sea Aerial Survey" aims to systematic surveying the seascape with its own equipped aircraft (Britten Norman Islander, reg. number: OO-MMM) and is undertaken in the context of the Bonn Agreement. The flying is done with the immediate aim of detecting all aspects of marine pollution from ships and abnormal situations, such as the presence of oils, pollutant waste or objects that are adrift. However, all facets of the sea in the area placed under the jurisdiction of Belgium are under the attention, in endeavour to discover and document them. A total of 250 flying hours over the sea (Mainly above Belgian Territorial Waters and the Belgian Economic Exclusive Zone) are scheduled every year. Most of the flying hours have been devoted to pollution surveillance - on average, almost 80% of the flying time. It is important to remember that, whatever the mission, the detection and identification of pollution remain the top priority. The various missions are: 1. Environmental monitoring of discharges and pollution 2. Support and guidance of response units and intervention in the event of an accident at sea 3. Monitoring fishery activities in Belgian waters 4. Observation of sand and gravel extraction and the dumping of dredging sludge 5. Observation of the maritime traffic, in co-operation with the marime services of the Federal Police 6.Follow-up of the licences and authorisations in context of activities such as the installation of wind farms, the launch of mussel farm units, etc. 7. Observation of marine phenomena 8. Observation of the fauna and flora such as large whales, dolphins and porpoises, birds or the proliferation of algae and the production of foam 9. Observation of recreational and sports activities along the coast: sailing, boating and individual diving, sport fishing, the beach and the related sports 10. Observation and monitoring of compliance with the rules in force in protected areas where other activities are limited Show less
