I've seen Kate's leadership and advocacy skills on display for years as we participated in Transportation4Vermont which she led while at VNRC. Kate nurtured a coalition of diverse organizations working for policy changes in Vermont to favor more sustainable transportation. I appreciated her ability to connect with of us as individuals and stakeholders. She is thoughtful, kind, generous and all these traits make it easy for her to create an effective team that is pleased to work with her. Strikingly, the T4VT coalition is mostly women in a field normally 2/3 men. I'm sure this gives the group a perspective missing in other transportation settings. I'm sure this reflects Kate's abilities to bring people in. Nobody else in transportation seem to have managed it. As we've worked I've seen Kate's depth of knowledge and wisdom about transportation, land-use, ecology and most of all the way politics works. Here also, Kate's exceptional relationship skill helped us translate policy goals into political relationships, which of course is how all politics gets done. I'm pleased to know Kate and look forward to remaining in touch as her career unfolds.

I'm delighted to recommend Kate McCarthy for just about anything. She is smart, doggedly determined, always well prepared, and committed to working collaboratively. And she is also about the kindest person you'll ever meet. I've known Kate for probably 8 years or so, and have worked with her on many projects and committees. She is measured, thoughtful, and inclusive, even (especially) when being so is difficult. I've long been struck by her ability to adhere to Aaron Burr's advice to Alexander Hamilton to "talk less, smile more" -- even in circumstances when most people would be tempted to say something ill-considered. Kate is also really good at understanding (and staying focused on) the big picture of her work. She knows how transportation and land use shape each other, and in so doing, form the constraints within which environmental quality plays out. She also understands -- and sees the importance of -- the ways in which these constraints affect people's quality of life. These two attributes -- a commitment to welcoming everyone's perspectives on how to make places better, coupled with a deep understanding of the way all of those perspectives are shaped by decisions about land use and transportation --are at the heart of what makes Kate an exceptional meeting facilitator for this sort of work. Wise decisions about complex land use issues require both inclusiveness and expertise. It's unusual to find both of these attributes in a single person. Kate has them both, and then some.
