Athanassios (Thanos) Skodras

Kostas is holding the Student Activities Chair of IEEE Greece Section for the past 3 years. I consider his volunteering service as successful. He is very responsible, fast in his actions and has the ability to communicate with the fellow officers and the students in an efficient way.

Athanasios Kakarountas

Kostas is the live definition of 'enquiring mind'. He is a vivid person, motivating young people to discover their talents and dexterities. As a Student Activity Chairman (Greece IEEE Section), he managed in two years to increase the number of Greece IEEE Student Branches and engage hundreds of students in IEEE activities. Furthermore, he proved to be an excellent colleague, offering much of his valueble personal time to voluntariy projects mainly targeting students and IEEE. I strongly recommend Kostas as an efficient leader and an excellent teacher for non-formal skills.

IEEE is the main professional body for electrical and electronics engineers, as well as computer scientists. In IEEE Greece, my role is to work with student branches in attracting new members, organising contests and outreach events and motivating university and school students to engage in start-ups and other entrepreneurial activities. In my daily routine, I supervise PhD candidates and developers working in EU and Greek funded projects and research work by PhD candidates. Proposal planning, writing up and project reporting (planned reports and deliverables) are important parts of this, as is planning and writing up academic papers. In addition, I'm an advocate for affective computing and serious/learning games, giving talks in academic and general audiences and organising demos and events to showcase related technologies.

Volunteering is an important part of my everyday life, especially when it comes to motivating students and adults to take up programming and acquire technology-related skills. Besides EU Code Week, which boomed from 4 events in 2013 to more than 300 last year, making Greece the most successful country in the EU, I participate in an NGO called Girls Go Coding which aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM education and careers.
