As Thailand attracts more international visitors, English has become more important to everyday Thais. I spent seven months as a teacher of English at an independent Catholic School in rural Thailand. I designed lesson plans and school-wide presentations for 250 students between the ages of 5 and 9. Although my lessons were grammar based, they included a lot of language based activities and games – it’s important to know your customer, no matter what age! During this time, I traveled at every opportunity and learned how to flourish in a country where I did not speak the language. Show less

Visual merchandising is an incredibly important part of retail marketing. The way products are displayed and promoted can have a major impact on consumer reactions to them and on how much merchandise is sold. By displaying products in ways that are appealing, accessible and attractive, retailers can increase sales and improve their profit margins. Many consumers believe they are purchasing products when they shop, but in fact they are often purchasing the experience of shopping. My job was to make that experience as pleasurable as possible by creating window and store displays including color, lighting, space, product information, sensory inputs (such as smell, touch, and sound), as well as technologies such as digital displays and interactive installations. I was also put in charge of teaching these skills to interns, while managing my own work. And I was careful to photograph and document each piece, some of which can be seen here. http://designsbykit.blogspot.com/ Show less

Angie Star Jewelry was founded in 2002, by sisters Angie and Michelle Olsgard and has grown into a full design studio showcasing local, sustainable, custom jewelry collections. As an aspiring jewelry maker I worked under Angie, learning jewelry making techniques and skills related to the job such as customer service and time management. I learned to create one-of-a-kind jewelry for high-end customers, and was responsible for creating jewelry lines while also learning the basic skills involved in polishing, setting, crafting and repairing jewelry. I became passionate about creating jewelry and have since then started my own business. I love creating new lines every season. Show less

This was a two-week volunteer trip through to help the children of the Lakota Reservation where there is very high suicide rate and a huge alcohol problem. Those two weeks changed my life and opened my eyes to the bigger world around me.
