  Assessed medical imaging modality diagnostic performance using an analytical framework developed from statistical decision theory, with focus on the effect of light scattering in biological tissue on the detectability of a noninvasive biological imaging modality, Optical Coherence Tomography. Our research group pioneered this statistical theory based medical image analysis method, which allows for the derivation of objective performance assessment benchmarks using statistical inferences. • Conducted experimental research in quantum optics; designed and implemented optical lattices for research on laser cooling and trapping in the preparation of quantum computing. • Hands-on experience of working with a complex experimental set-up in the Quantum Optics Laboratory (more than 200 pieces of optical components) instilled a system engineering approach. • Applied argon-pumped YAG tunable laser to study fluorescence spectrum and lifetime of Erbium- doped glass; analyzed data to determine the quality of the specialized glass to develop high power fiber laser. • Conducted computer simulations on diffraction study of tracking-error-signal and focus-error-signal of double-layer DVD for research on expansion of optical data storage capacity.
