The Arboretum is helping to extend my real world knowledge of planting design and maintenance. Learning how to design for specific spaces, how plantings work together, and how to better communication between Landscape Designers, Landscape Contractors, and Gardeners. Along with working in the gardens, I attend bi-weekly construction meetings for the cafe renovation project, involving architects, landscape architect, engineer, construction manager, and the designer of exhibits. My choice for my independent project is an expansion of the currently nameless environmental education forest naturescape. I believe play time immersed in nature is important to a child's development and health. The proposed renovations would assist environmental educators as well as families with children, by creating a whimsical space that promotes creative play, builds physical strength, and connects children to nature while learning about the geology and ecology of the WNC region. Elements include a willow branch tree hut with woven baskets for nature art projects, log-stacle course, water feature with digging pits, climbing net with zipline, and animal sculptures built from branches and driftwood. The spaces around these elements will be defined by understory forest plantings and soft wood chips. The site will be fenced off with multiple entry and exit points to control flow. The elements would merge with the existing landscape by building from natural materials such as wood logs, branches, vines, and rope. Show less

I was a construction assistant in the summer of 2010 to build the Ball State Backyard Exhibit in the Horticultural Building at the Indiana State Fair. The Ball State Backyard in an interior public landscape provided by the Landscape Architecture program that represents the LA program and BSU. In 2010 and 2011 I also worked during the fair to maintain the interior landscape, as well as an ambassador for Ball State- providing information to potential students and their parents about programs and experience in my field of study.
