Director of Education - Responsible for the vision, implementation and development of a comprehensive educational ministry of an 1,800 member urban church. I worked closely with the adult educational component of the ministry while supervising the directors of five other ministries (middle school, high-school and children’s ministry, along with the directors of two church-based child development centers). I also worked closely with the ministerial staff to develop and lead worship, provide various opportunities for the spiritual nourishment and pastoral care of the community. With a focus on Adult Education ministry, my responsibilities included the research, development and implementation of curriculum for Sunday mornings; the development and support of various small group studies; the creative development and oversight of a mid-week educational program; the oversight of an endowed speaker series, The Charles R. Willard Lectures, the marketing and advertising of the educational ministry; the development of relationships among various local educational and religious institutions; the design and implementation of a new child and youth security policy, the recruitment and training of teachers as well as the development and teaching of various classes. As a minister of Word and Sacrament, I also had the honor of developing and leading a variety of worship services in various capacities. These include not only leading and preaching in services on Sunday morning but also on Wednesday afternoon, seasonal services, baptisms, weddings and funerals held both at First Church and in the wider community. Serving this community during a time of church transition offered the unique opportunity to critically engage not only the educational ministry but the overall structure and sustainability of First Presbyterian Church. This process utilized my gifts of critical assessment, faith, creativity, discussion facilitation, problem solving and conflict resolution. Show less

    • Associate Minister
      • Jul 2005 - Apr 2010

As a generalist associate, I had the opportunity to serve in a variety of capacities. Woven through them all was the weekly planning, developing and leading two worship services, preaching monthly, and officiating special and seasonal services. While I provided spiritual guidance and pastoral care to congregation members of all ages, I focused on a young adult ministry including discussion groups and age-specific classes, as well as mission and fellowship opportunities. I also served as a staff liaison to the Education and Mission Ministry Teams as well as the Board of Deacons. As staff liaison to the Education Ministry Team, I had the opportunity to develop curriculum and teach to different age groups. With relative freedom and dynamic resources for learning in the Lexington area, I shaped challenging classes ranging from politics to sexuality, from interfaith dialogue to the relevance of the Reformed Tradition. As staff liaison to the Mission Ministry Team, I critically engaged missional issues that shaped and informed the Christian mission in that particular context, including a transition from a modernist model of mission to a post-modern model of mutual empowerment. This process incorporated annual mission retreats and consistent experiential learning opportunities. I also organized, led and participated in several domestic and international mission trips. As staff liaison to the twenty-one member Board of Deacons, I was able to initiate the critical assessment of their role in the life of the community and work with the group to develop and shape a new vision for the Board. Through this team, I facilitated the production of a 2009 church directory, helped design and produce a new web page and oversaw a church signage project. Show less

I served as pastor of two small rural communities of former war refugees. Responsibilities included weekly worship services, small group bible study and pastoral care. After assessing the needs of the community, I established and developed a sustainable ecumenical youth program, taught English and participated in the daily life of the community. I worked directly with CRISPAZ to critically engage their role in a post-war El Salvador. Drawing on my experience in business, I also worked with their Economics for People Program, helping streamline and organize the fair trade of El Salvadorian hand-made crafts to a global market. I was elected to the CRISPAZ Board of Directors in 2003. Show less

Organized, developed, and directed one of the three divisions of a locally-based marketing and distribution company. I assessed the regional market, developed a full-service product line, negotiated and developed relationships with over fifty manufacturers to establish the successful Advertising Speciality business. In the process, I hired and trained ten sales representatives and designed a long-term marketing strategy. In 1998, The Charlotte Business Journal listed the company as one of the fifty fastest growing companies in Charlotte, with sales reaching over $2.5 million. In January of 1999, that division became the focus of the entire company. Show less
