As a leader within the Griffith Sciences University PASS program (Peer Assisted Study Session), my role was to design and lead quality study sessions for university students attending the science courses, Biological Systems and Genetics and Evolutionary Biology. My role as a PASS leader was to consistently create positive, professional and collaborative study environments on a weakly basis to promote an understanding of the key scientific concepts in these courses. With a professional background in environmental education, I utilized my strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills to incorporate a combination of learning techniques and activities that facilitate independent student learning. Duties included inputting recorded turtle nesting information onto bulk data sheets and computer database and assisting Dr Limpus where needed such a responding to reports of stranded marine life. Field surveys involved recording sand temperatures and conducting “emerged “ nest examinations to assist in evaluating the hatchling success rate per season. Beach patrol's involved the identification of turtle tracks, nesting turtles and species, radio communication liaison with lab personnel to record turtles via flipper codes, collecting carapace measurements and recording nesting information. Nesting relocation necessary if clutch laid below high tide mark. Records such as measurements and scale counts were conducted on priority hatchlings such as flat back species. Leadership responsibilities involved the supervision of new volunteers to ensure safe and effective data collection methods were carried out. QPWS rangers were assisted in visitor orientation and education where needed. Additional responsibilities involved leading up the data input from the research information gathered on Green sea turtles species conducted in various other conservation research locations such as North West Island. Data collected and compiled contributes to Dr Limpus continued research and allows the Department of Environment and Science to monitor and achieve long-term conservation outcomes by implementing the necessary conservation management strategies and legislation necessary to protect marine turtle populations from various threats such as climate change and land use change. Merazonia is a non-profit wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre that receives animals, confiscated in the illegal animal trade industry. The animals often arrive in a poor physical and mental state of health. After a time in quarantine, following assessment and under the direction of the chief vet, they are integrated into the existing animal group or if it is possible, introduced back into the wild. My responsibilities included: General animal caretaking and husbandry of a variety of species birds, Primates, puma, sloth and other mammals.Caretaking of animals with special needs such as quarantine animals, sick and juvenile animals. I worked ‘open contact’ with an orphaned juvenile woolly monkey, which included daily feeding, care and enrichment. I also worked ‘Closed contact’ with other species of primates such as a group of white-fronted capuchins which included daily feeding, behavioural studies, and implementing life enrichment projects. I assisted infrastructural projects including the construction of animal enclosures and paths. As Merazonia refuge is located in a remote area within the cloud forests of Ecuador I also demonstrated my confidence living and working in primitive and isolated environments. Show less

Assisted in the daily feeding and care of a variety of rescued South American native fauna species including the independent responsibility of an adult male ocelot, which I was required to care for and walk open contact in an isolated and remote tropical rainforest reserve on a daily basis. As this individual displayed many unwanted and potentially dangerous behaviours, I successfully implemented and carried out effective conditioning training and behavioural monitoring and record keeping, which successfully diminished these unwanted behaviours so the animal was able to continue being worked open contact in a natural enriching and stimulating environment. Working with a variety of other species such as Tapir, peccaries, deer, Rhea, Ring-tailed coati, pumas and birds also increased my animal handling and keeper abilities and experience. Additional tasks involved the construction of paths and enclosures. Show less
