Working Holiday Travelling Experience

Jan 2009 - Sep 2009
Following the economic demise as I graduated in 2008, & the subsequent ‘downsizing’ of many companies within my industry, I found that despite an impressive degree & several high-profile interviews, there were considerably less positions available for the then flooded market of designers in my field, & many experienced designers applying & securing those roles. I decided to do what so many people claim to be such a life changing experience- I moved to Australia! Living mainly in Margaret River 172 miles south of Perth, I moved between Willyabrup, Prevelly, Albany & Perth, working in a silver service restaurant, a vineyard, cellar door, excavating, & waxing cheese at MRCheese factory - all fantastic experiences, where I met some great people who I’m humbled to remain friends with. During my time in Aus I submerged myself in the observation & exploration of Australian architecture, lifestyle & interior design; meeting builders, property developers, & visiting several fabulous hand-built homes, personalised to perfection for their inhabitants & surroundings. I returned home to England invigorated by a touch of Aussie exuberance & instilled with a passion to form my own contribution to the design world of spatial design. Now as I enjoyed the knowledge & the insight of working in an electrical contracting firm, providing quality electrical services throughout northwest England, there remained in me a fire burning to get out there & provide to the world (or at least the northwest) creative solutions in my qualified & researched field. Thus came the cultivation of two great minds; my business partner Donna, with whom I qualified, & who has since gained 5 years experience providing Spatial Planning, Store Fitting & CAD drafting services for a national company specialising in several major sectors!! I now join the many in their testimonies to the profound effects that an experience such as Aus can have on a person- as I heard only yesterday “It’s all about perspective!” Show less
