To develop generic guidelines for integrated management of marine protected areas & adjacent terrestrial protected areas, i.e. developing guidelines to assist managers of marine parks & managers of adjacent terrestrial national parks to take into account the impacts that the management of national parks will have on marine parks, & vice versa; To trial, utilise & assess the value of an extensive & complex GIS in conjunction with interactive conservation planning software. This was to develop methodologies, protocols & guidelines for the development of marine park designs which will be able to fulfil the dual roles of conservation of biodiversity, while allowing, & providing opportunities for, the ecologically sustainable & equitable use of marine park resources. To help facilitate Aboriginal communities to establish appropriate methods, options & protocols for Aboriginal community involvement & input into the integrated management of marine protected areas & their adjacent terrestrial protected areas, & marine park design • The new NSW Solitary Islands & Jervis Bay Marine Parks & their adjacent terrestrial reserves were used as case studies for the project, which involved extensive public / stakeholder consultation.
