I participated in MIT's yearly international competition - iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines). I also came up with the idea of designing and implementing our own specialised portable fluorimeter device that would improve on our system and make it cheap and viable. Eventually at the iGEM Jamboree in Boston, USA, we were awarded a Gold medal and two special prizes – “Best Health & Medicine Project” and “Best Innovation in Measurement”. Apart from my professional skills, I also improved my team work and communication skills as I dealt partially with our public outreach, social media and website design.

Aberdeen, United Kingdom Under the supervision of Dr Alessandro De Moura, I worked on developing a proposed mathematical model for the replication of DNA. I built a computer simulation and compared its results to data obtained through Next Generation Sequencing. A major point in the research was that through my simulations I showed a particular behaviour of replication forks degrading over time. Also, I presented my work to some of the leading scientists in the field from University of Dundee and University of… Show more Under the supervision of Dr Alessandro De Moura, I worked on developing a proposed mathematical model for the replication of DNA. A major point in the research was that through my simulations I showed a particular behaviour of replication forks degrading over time. Also, I presented my work to some of the leading scientists in the field from University of Dundee and University of Nottingham. The next year (Oct 2014) I took part in a “Meet the Researcher” Showcase at Porthlethen Academy, Aberdeenshire, where I presented my work to local students. The project was a great experience through which I improved my problem solving and research, as well as my IT & Programming skills. Overall, it was a welcomed confidence and networking boost.
