Bio
Leif Klein
I first met and hired Kevin Myers in 1988 to be the art director of Lapidary Journal (now Jewelry Artist Magazine), Colored Stone Magazine, and Accent Magazine. Two of these were monthlies and one was bimonthly. At that time all three magazines were suffering from signifigant editorial and design problems and were in financial trouble. If I had not hired Kevin as the art director of these magazines and their annual directories, the magazines would certainly have gone out of business. When he came to the magazines, the art department was in chaos. He worked tirelessly to improve the look of the magazines as well as the way the art department functioned. It was critically important that the look of the magazines improve immediately. His design work helped the magazines' image change overnight. He also designed most of our big advertising and circulation promotion pieces, despite the fact that it was never in his job description. If something needed to be done and he could help, he always did. He is one of the hardest workers I have ever known. He has tremendous stamina and will always give 100% no matter how overworked he is. It is important to note the scale of Kevin's art and design skills. On many occassions we needed artwork to go with stories or covers. Despite the massive unpaid overtime required, Kevin actually created original paintings and photoshop montages that were always extraordinary. His knowledge of modern art and art history is extensive, and he is an encyclopedia of art and design information. He literally taught me the basics of design and art. I worked daily with Kevin for ten years and I can honestly say that he never once complained to me or lost his temper, despite a huge and diverse workload year in and year out. When the magazines became more successful, we hired several assistants in his department. They were always well trained and loved working with him. He had great relationships with our entire staff, our frelance photographers and illustrators, as well as all of our vendors. In general, he has a great sense of humor, and he possesses one of the finest work ethics I have seen in my entire career. If you get a chance to work with him, you should consider yourself blessed. Dedicated to his design and finished product, Kevin is a skilled and reliable professional. I worked with Kevin for many years and his easy managing style and affable personality suited him well for a roll that often had many conflicting demands. The end result was quality designs delivered on deadline and a relaxed working atmosphere that is sorely needed in a stress-filled, busy office.
