In my position as a research analyst, I work with a team of researchers who are interested in answering questions related to the interactions between people and drugs, in the real world, and at the population level. We use the administrative healthcare data available to us through the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, which maintains a population-based data repository contain data on virtually every contact between Manitoba residents and the universal healthcare system. We have conducted research on prescription opioid utilization, prescribing patterns, and prescribing safety, the burden of herpes zoster in Manitoba, examining the delivery of oral chemotherapeutic agents by community pharmacies, drug-drug interactions, and the impact of Health Canada and FDA warnings on physician prescribing. Our research team varies in size and composition depending upon the specific research question. My specific responsibilities can vary depending upon the project. At the one extreme, I may take the role of a co-PI, involved from idea conception through to delivery of the final manuscript. At the other extreme, my duties may be restricted to the development and implementation of the scientific and analytical protocols, selecting the appropriate statistical models and tests to describe the results, and preparation of figures and tables.
