    • Research / Teaching Associate - Safety of Robotics & Autonomous Systems
      • Mar 2022 - Present

I teach an introductory course on machine learning and a more advanced session on the weaknesses of current explainability methods when applied to the assurance of machine learning systems. My current research interests include large language models or other foundation models, generative AI toolchains such as langchain / GPT4 and safe guarding user interaction with ML. • RA on ENCASE project for Rolls-Royce
      • Jan 2018 - Jul 2021

Working with Rolls-Royce on the ENCASE project for the next generation Ultrafan / ECOSistem engines. The project looks at how to incorporate all aspects of safety analysis within the system design models. These are currently held as SysML models and our work has involved creating profiles for fault logic analysis and traceability of system safety requirements. The aim is to enable tight integration of the FHA and lower level functional deviations and fault logic using functional blocks… Show more Working with Rolls-Royce on the ENCASE project for the next generation Ultrafan / ECOSistem engines. The project looks at how to incorporate all aspects of safety analysis within the system design models. These are currently held as SysML models and our work has involved creating profiles for fault logic analysis and traceability of system safety requirements. The aim is to enable tight integration of the FHA and lower level functional deviations and fault logic using functional blocks provided by system design. Some of the work has been published in SAFECOMP, IMBSA and ESREL.

    • Associate Lecturer
      • Apr 2016 - Dec 2017

Marking the MSc in Safety Critical Systems Engineering modules. Also worked part-time on the Swedish government funded FiC project (Factory in the Cloud) looking at safety of configurable resources deployed to local instances to enable rapid changes in factory production.

    • Research Associate
      • Mar 2013 - Apr 2016

Working on the EU funded NASCENT project to look at using novel substrates, in particular various forms of carbon nano-tubes, to create computational devices. The process uses evolutionary algorithms to configure the substrates by applying a range of voltages across a microelectrode array.

    • Research Associate
      • Jul 2011 - Mar 2013

Work on the SESAR WP-E ASHiCS project, whose bid I helped write. The project looked at safety in the next generation of air traffic management using business (4D) trajectories and used search-guided fast time ATC simulations to discover hazards that would have been difficult to find and trace using conventional manual techniques. This project was developed using C++ (both managed and unmanaged code) under Microsoft's .Net platform.

    • Research Associate
      • May 2010 - Jun 2011

Safety certification for Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAVs, UGVs, etc) for the SEAS DTC project. Industrial partners include Advanced Technology Centre (BAE) and Military Air Systems (BAE).
