  Keshan Pillay joined Makalani as CEO in September 2008. Keshan is a senior investment professional with significant experience in the structuring and financing of Corporate and Black Economic Empowerment (‘BEE‘) transactions, including Management Buyouts, Leveraged Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions. Keshan is also well experienced in the arranging, underwriting and distributing of senior and mezzanine debt instruments and has become a leading expert in BEE finance. Keshan has a strong reputation in the market as a pre-eminent financier of and advisor to BEE transactions. Keshan had temporarily relinquished his role as CEO of Makalani from April 2021 to June 2022 in order to step into a caretaker role as the Interim CEO of Ubank Group Limited and has now returned to his role at Makalani. Keshan was initially appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Makalani Holdings Limited in September 2008, a R2.5 billion listed fund that targeted and facilitated in excess of 25 BEE transactions. Keshan was closely involved in managing all of the above positions, and in ensuring that the return to shareholders provided by all these transactions, was maximized. In 2010, Keshan successfully led the R1.9 billion delisting of Makalani Holdings from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, affording shareholders the opportunity to exit their investment at fair value while at the same time allowing the remaining investors to fully realise the net asset value of the portfolio in the unlisted environment, and position the company for its next phase of growth and development.
