    • Sea Turtle Biologist/Oceanographer
      • Jul 1998 - Dec 2003

Led research on pelagic sea turtles in the eastern tropical Pacific. Organized equipment and data collection for the duration of the research cruise. Continued research from my graduate studies and expanded the focus on feeding ecology through more stomach pumping and collecting skin samples for isotope analysis. Studied the feeding ecology and community structure of a commensal pelagic crab, Planes cyaneus, which inhabits the inguinal region of the turtles. Compiled database and analyzed data to determine relevant trends and relationships.Presented data and findings at scientific meetings. Independently collected all oceanographic data. Collected chlorophyll water samples and expendable bathythermographs (XBTs) to get surface productivity and a temperature with depth profile, respectively. Performed a nightly oceanographic station including a CTD and net tows. The CTD provided water samples for analysis of nutrients, salinity, and chlorophyll with depth while also measuring conductivity. Filtered chlorophyll samples and analyzed the samples using a Turner Designs fluorometer. Analyzed salinity samples using an 8400a laboratory salinometer to ensure the proper functioning of the CTD sensors. Net tows consisted of nightly deployment of manta and bongo nets. Collected specimens were preserved in formaldehyde and sodium borate solution. Monitored and maintained the ek500 echo sounder. Maintained all oceanographic equipment throughout the duration of the cruise. Processed and edited data using DOS and Windows based programs specific to the project. Show less

Aided in research project on the olive ridley sea turtle, Lepidochelys olivacea, in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica. The objective of the project was to compare the survivability of juvenile olive ridleys resulting from group and solitary nesting females between Nancite and Naranjo beaches. Surveys were conducted at night on Nancite and Naranjo nesting beaches for 3 months. Once a turtle began nesting the eggs were individually weighed and measured. The entire clutch was also weighed. Each turtle was tagged and measured. Blood was also collected for testosterone T level analysis. Once the eggs were hatched, the hatchlings were weighed and measured and their survivability to the water was recorded. Show less
