May 1st, 2011 Dear Sir or Madame: I wish to recommend Kerry Anderson for a position in your firm. I have known Kerry for four years. She was a student of mine in ARCH 663 Thesis Programming and Preparation; ARCH 771 Advanced Architectural Design, and she was one of my thesis students in ARCH 772 Design Thesis. As you review her resume you will see that she is a fine design student and a fine student overall. In the course of her studies here Kerry developed excellent design skills. She has a fine hand as well as excellent modeling skills, and she has developed astonishing skills in digital modeling and rendering. I would like to emphasize that the basis of her digital skills are her understanding of the use of light to form space and render materials. I think as you review her portfolio you will see that her designs are an accumulation of thoroughly studied sections, the details that form them, and the visual behavior of materials when under sunlight or artificial light at various times of day and year. Kerry’s project for a cancer treatment center in Blue Earth, Minnesota portrays her sense of detail, her understanding of place, and her ability to look far ahead to a time when cancer is a treatable disease that people live with. Kerry has been extraordinarily active in our chapter of AIAS, Freedom for Design, and is an officer in the honor society Tau Sigma Delta. Those of us who have worked with Kerry find her a person who is inventive, diligent, curious, honest, gregarious, and trustworthy. She has a congenial personality and a fine sense of humor. She would be a wonderful addition to your firm. Please contact me with any questions. Sincerely, Mark M. Barnhouse, A.I.A., NCARB, R.A.
