Dan Duncan

I have worked with Kent for years in support of a complicated legacy application with an even more complicated database where Kent served as the DBA. Kent routinely went above and beyond to help the application succeed. He not only performed his traditional DBA responsibilities with aplomb, but was constantly thinking through Improvements he could make. He helped developers tune and refactor long running queries, ran analytics and scripted alerts to prevent down time, automated maintenance of a multisite DB, and helped secure and maintain good practices that were all outside his primary area of responsibility. His ability to drill down to find the true root cause of an issue, combined with his ability to think through future impacts of suggested actions make him a rare find that I would not hesitate to hire in the future.

This position focused on database support for AT&T’s IT project management database. My manager describes me as a “self starter and team player,” “always looking at ways to improve things and add value.” Common tasks include refreshing the data in test environments, schema installation and upgrades, system monitoring and 24x7 on-call support, troubleshooting deployment scripts (including finding causes for compilation errors in PL/SQL functions and stored procedures). Performance tuning, especially index management. Write and maintain OS shell scripts for automated monitoring and processing. Audit and provision database access. Projects undertaken on my own initiative included a Selenium browser-automation script (written in Python) which automated fulfillment of user access requests. I also created a database of infrastructure assets (host machines and services) organized by application and environment (production, test, development) and created a PHP front end for navigating through the data. Integrated open-source workflow management software and RabbitMQ with company systems to automate deployment of software kits. Show less

Olympic Health Management processed health insurance claims for several insurance companies. At Olympic, I was hired as a Visual Basic developer; I became one of two employees responsible for all aspects of database administration for the production, testing, and development environments. My particular contributions focused largely on enhancing security and on automating and streamlining scheduled jobs and administrative procedures.
