At Velo I helped people find the right bicycles and accessories to fit their needs. I also did a lot of mechanical work as well as assisted with the shop's minimal IT needs. I love bicycles. Great job for my working holiday to explore Australia. At Velo I helped people find the right bicycles and accessories to fit their needs. As the face and hands of support for all IBM hardware I learned to handle tough situations, produce creative solutions, troubleshoot effectively, and develop quality relationships with my customers. I learned professionalism in many different corporate environments working on production hardware for Walmart, American Airlines, Williams Oil, The City of Tulsa, universities, banks, casinos, insurance companies, hospitals, school systems, and IBM itself. I know everything about hardware from Intel based servers to IBM mainframes, storage arrays and tape libraries, NetApp servers, and Cisco routers. Show less

In the neurophysics lab I design mathematical programs to model and predict neural cascades. My programs measure such things as the optimal strength of connections from excitatory and inhibitory neurons in order to achieve the highest dynamic range in stimulation detection or the level of mutual information in a neural network. These predictions and models are then tested on real slices of brain tissue. I mostly program in Matlab, but I also use Mathematica. The level of intellectual strain involved in this exceeds the difficulty of my classes. While this job is unpaid, it has provided me the highest level of job satisfaction. Being able to specialize in such a rich field has been an amazing experience. Show less

8 hours each day learning the art of aircraft maintenance. I have always had a strong interest in aircraft and flight and this provided a great opportunity for me to explore a very mechanical blue-collar job. Many of the tasks were repetitive but the reward was a greater understanding of the overall system and the engineering behind it. I loved working on such beautiful machines, as much as I loved spending my summer in South Africa. I would have liked to have stayed longer as I especially liked the increased responsibility I was given towards the end of my stay. Show less
