When I think of the qualities that I deem most important for a tech lead / project manager to possess, Ken checks every box. He has a wealth of knowledge about the project technologies as well as the business domain and excellent teaching abilities in imparting this knowledge to other team members. Through his helpful nature and positive attitude, he enables team members to learn and grow skill sets and take on more responsibilities quickly. With a team scattered across multiple cities, Ken maintains a perfect balance of coordinating efforts while also exhibiting faith in everyone to get the job done with minimal oversight. He is collaborative, proactive, and supportive. These characteristics are all the hallmark of a great manager. Yet, what I especially appreciate about Ken is the winning combination of 1. a willingness and encouragement to explore new approaches for technical solutions, 2. maintaining a healthy level of risk aversion to keep the production system stable while not stifling technical progress, 3. respecting my technical expertise and valuing my opinions, and 4. empowering me to execute my recommended changes to the code base for the betterment of the product.
