How can we teach students to leverage individuality in their future career? We are building a platform for students to execute their own ideas, to explore opinions and and perspectives with students from 28+ countries. Our vision is a world where the hardest working individuals are the ones in the highest positions, making the decisions for mankind. How do we create a curriculum that makes every student feel heard and inspired? Our classroom was an environment which welcomed opinions and conversation. When students have the space to articulate their opinion and negotiate meaning with their classmates, they understand themselves deeper. I would build and pivot lessons continuously; I wrote curriculum that pushed students to analyze author intention, and I continuously pivoted their lessons and assignments. How do we capture the culture and character of a small town restaurant? Through digital design, I played with showcasing the precise atmosphere and authenticity of the restaurant and farm. Positioning ourselves in front of a larger audience, we were sure to keep the cool mixture of cosmopolitan and small-town. How do we unite a classroom with 10+ reading levels? In our diverse classroom, we ensured that every student felt connected and challenged by the content in the classroom. Working with immigrant students from Bangladesh and Yemen, we wanted students to feel represented, and reading at their precise ability. We found articles and fiction of similar topics, but at vastly different reading levels, so that students of all 10 reading abilities could engage with the same topic, and could work together in groups. The assignments were built to let students run in their own direction, and come back to teach one another. The experience showed me that when you give students the space to take ownership of their learning, they go beyond what I could have invented. Show less
