Prior to my position as a TA at SPCA, I successfully completed the Applied Animal Behavior practicum Western Michigan University's Behavior Analysis department offers. This practicum is where I learned the necessary skills needed to train the target operant behaviors of dogs. Upon completing this course, I was able to move on to assessment of the dogs, supervision, mentoring, and grading of the students' work.-Application of operant principles in training obedience behaviors of shelter dogs:*Sit*"Look"*"Sit"*Down*"Leave-it"*"Shake"*"Dance"*Touch(to hand:jump)*Sit Pretty*Walking1*Walking2(stop&sit)*"Come"(with collar touch)*"Wait"*"Stay"*BATS-Recording obedience behaviors by use of behavioral contingencies -Charting obedience behaviors and marking improvements Show less

    • Applied Animal Behavior Teaching Assistant
      • Jan 2015 - May 2015

My work at SPCA involves assisting graduate student, Stacy Engebretson in her work being done with supervision from Dr. Lisa Baker through Western Michigan University's Applied Animal Behavior Practicum. This work involves the use of operant conditioning to correct inappropriate behaviors in shelter animals (mainly dogs) so that they may become adoptable contenders in the shelter system. Operant conditioning replaces undesired behaviors with incompatible behaviors (alternative, appropriate behavior). I am able to do this through training of the animals and sustaining them through consistent practice and maintenance of commands.-Supervision of practicum students’ application of operant principles in training the dogs of the shelter the most basic and important obedient commands-Provided feedback on their performances and quality of works-Assessment of incoming dogs and their temperaments:reactions to unpredictable stimuli (children)*manipulation (pulling of skin/invading space:children)*play/tag and recovery (aggression/reactions to excitable stimuli)*paw sensitivity (squeezing of paw:children and husbandry)*overall first impressions and cage impressions*assumed temperaments to children and their walking capabilities (gentle leader recommended or not).-Collaboration with teacher on how to implement operant principles-Grading of the students’ behavioral contingencies of obedience behaviors, charting of behaviors, and measuring of dogs’ improvements-Advanced operant training: Food aggression*BATS Show less
