I am investigating and understanding the disease processes that lead to Autism. An important component of its genesis is the link to heart diseases. In fact, there have been suggestions that some people with autism like disorders also have cardiovascular diseases but there is little research as to the underlying causes. Therefore, I will be investing this heart brain connection. I am investigating and understanding the disease processes that lead to Autism. I am investigating the role of KCNQ channels in the neuronal death of the CA1 region of the hippocampus after global ischeima

My first year I was investigating the PKA phosphorylation sites on the NR2A subunit of the NMDA receptor. I have also just started a project look at the role REST plays in modulating potassium channels in the hippocampus after ischemia.

I investigated the modulation of T-type calcium channels by the actin binding protein, Kelch-like 1 (KLHL1). I discovered KLHL1 (which is associated with spinocerebellar ataxia type 8) can increase the current density and number of channels of a1H T-type calcium channels at the membrane.
