As a Senior Lecturer, I teach a variety of classes including computer applications in mining, mineralogy and petrology, mineral exploration and geostatistics, and geoscience modeling. I also have been an instructor for geology and geological engineering field camps in the summer for the Black Hills Natural Sciences Field Station. As a geologist teaching in a mining engineering department, and having spoken in depth with industry representatives, it is clear there is a great need for cross-disciplinary interaction/training among geologists, geological engineers, mining engineers, and metallurgists. Along those lines, I have been focusing on developing classes to serve that purpose. In the spring of 2019 I co-taught a new class, Geometallurgy. This class emphasized communication and team work between disciplines. It was a fun class to teach and the students gained a great deal through the team projects. In the spring of 2020, I taught a new class called 'The influence of ore deposit types on the mining cycle'. This class took a different approach to the same need. It focused on broader concepts of how ore deposit types control decisions in mining and processing and the environmental challenges. Show less
