I was assistant in the retail outlet for Common Ground Book Distributors located in Asheville, NC. I was responsible for inventory, markdowns, restocking, and visual merchandising of books after those books had been to the markets. With showrooms on the East and West Coasts, Common Ground Book Distributors is the largest wholesale book distributor for the specialty market in the Eastern United States. I worked for this and their sister-company for almost 7 years. My employment ended only because my husband was offered a scholarship to attend a competitive University in Barcelona, Spain. Show less

As a long-time part-time employee of this well-designed, innovative, and evolving shop, I was fortunate to work with and for creative, thoughtful, and genuine people in a shop centered around creative use and reuse. The aesthetic of the shop reflects its management and its clientele and the shop is a Retail Institution in a town that it know for its trend conscious visitors. This project started with a question related to materials and their continued use. I am an artist with an Master's Degree in Sustainable Development and with the use materials gleaned from 41 decommissioned, deconstructed pianos my husband and I were able to craft and curate 13 tons from these musical monoliths. He and I were both lead Artists on the project and it lead to many wall-hanging sculptures, installation pieces, community-based sound-interactive works, a few magazine articles, a radio interview, an online shop, and a line with a catalog based in Seattle, Washington (US). These resonate materials provided elegant way to have the sometimes avoided conversation about ethics, environment, and economic implications of our habits of consumption and a celebration of careful reuse. First as assistant to display at the shop in Berkeley and then San Franciscio, I was the Display Coordinator for Anthropologie #435 in Palo Alto, California. The Display Coordinator supports the visual and materials need of the shop in terms of visual and material language in form of signs and art-installations as well as the overall "feel" of the shop. I left this position after two years working for their company.
