I committed to sixth months of service as an AmeriCorps Member through CalSERVES. This required a 45-50 hour weekly commitment. My primary responsibilities included: - Organizing and encouraging involvement in recess activities during the day - Developing literacy tutoring lesson plans both in school (ELA, ELD), and during CalSERVES's COOLSchool After School program. During the After School program, I worked with a total of 4 groups of 2 students at a time. Curriculum included Sound Partners, REWARDS, STARS, Read Naturally, online resources and selected novels. Strong focus on fluency, comprehension, blending and segmenting depending on student need. - Mentoring 12 students in grades 1 – 6 in to work on their 40 developmental assets. Lesson plans ranged from structured activities intended to develop social and emotional skills, to more casual conversations as needed to provide student support. The last three weeks of my contract were devoted to completely restructuring and redesigning the CalSERVES member website using the free program Wix. Show less
