I worked with Dr. Jo Handelsman on the book "A World Without Soil". I provided research on soil science, erosion, and the socio-economic elements of land degradation issues. My role included editing, interviewing, and creative contributions to written content. Together, Jo and I wrote successful book proposals to Yale University Press and MIT Press, as well as a successful grant application to the Sloan Foundation. The book won a PROSE award from the Association of American Publisher's prize in the Government and Politics category, and has been reviewed in Nature, Science, and The New York Review of Books. Last summer, I asked myself: Is writing really what you want to do? I partook in a creative writing program at The Guardian and did the '18 books in 18 weeks' challenge. It felt as if I had grown wings. I learned that I absolutely love to write, both fiction and nonfiction, and to read the work of others.
