Student Advisor

Jan 2022 - Mar 2022
In this role I was a Law Student Advisor under the supervision of a practicing solicitor at the University of Adelaide. I advised clients on equal opportunity and anti-discrimination matters, which included in particular sexual harassment, racial discrimination, disability discrimination, victimisation, and the issue of pets in residential tenancies. I managed client case files, interviewed clients and drafted letters of advice. As part of the placement, we had weekly seminars where we engaged in reflective learning and practice. We also wrote blogs and journals to reflect and develop our learning about the importance of the client-centred approach in our future careers as lawyers. I achieved a High Distinction in this placement. Show less

PLEA Participant
-
Jan 2020 - Dec 2020
The Progressive Labour Education Association conducts an annual program for young people interested in the labour movement, unionism, social justice, labour law and left politics. The program aims to develop participants understanding of the role of progressive organisations in SA, including unions, social services and advocacy groups, the history of the progressive movement, politics, political theory and campaigning, and the workings of the labour movement and broader progressive movements. During my time in PLEA I developed a project to promote and protect renter’s rights in South Australia through legislative and policy reform. I took part in a group project to plan and map out an election campaign. I attended workshops with politicians, union organisers, lawyers and members of the media to broaden my knowledge of progressive history and policy reform. I gained practical skills and education including campaign planning and development, political theories of change, media training, ballot-counting and scrutineering, and developing a personal statement.
