I started in September filling in for an English Teacher with all new COVID protocols for the school district and a new hybrid teaching model. The primary teacher then came back in October which resulted in me being a building substitute for a couple of months. During that time period, I also studied for my final MTEL test; which I completed and passed online as a result of COVID-19. After another couple of months went by, I got a new role of paraprofessional for 5 English classes and 1 History class ranging from 8th grade to 11th grade. Uxbridge High School challenged me in the best ways and I learned a lot from my year there.

I completed my practicum at Dartmouth Middle School for a half semester, interrupted by COVID-19, while still taking classes at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. For my practicum, I ended up working with Paul Leconte, the same 7th grade ELA teacher I observed for my pre-practicum. I was excited to learn and slowly take over the classroom by the end of the semester, but unfortunately COVID-19 called for the schools to be shut down for in-person education after the University spring break. Thankfully, I started my practicum as soon as I could and would go in for full days so I completed my hours (215:51) and also had 71:18 primary teaching hours. This amount of time exceeded the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements by 100+ hours. Although I wish I could have stayed for the full semester and finished the program properly, I am still very thankful for all the information I've learned and am excited to put my new knowledge into work.

While I was finishing my final semester of my pre-practicum, I decided I wanted more experience, resulting in a substitute teacher job for a couple of months while continuing my education at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I substituted for many different subjects, including math and art, to try and get a better range for myself and my future teaching methods. I would come into the school knowing what subject I would be a substitute for, but would have to adapt to the lesson plan and the new students for each job. I learned a lot about the teacher and student relationship, communication and community between teachers in the school, and time management skills during this short time.

I completed my pre-practicum at Dartmouth Middle School for three semesters while still taking classes at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. My total hours for my pre-practicum were 90 hours where I spent my whole day in the school setting going back and forth between two teachers to get the most amount of hours per day. Throughout the school day, I would go from Paul Leconte, a 7th grade ELA teacher, to Susan Pielech, a 8th grade ELA and Social Studies teacher. I really liked the opportunity to learn from both of them since they had different subjects, teaching methods, and students to observe. While completing my pre-practicum, I mostly observed my teachers, helped correct papers/school work from the students, and walk around connecting and seeing if any students needed anything. During these semesters, I learned a lot about the difficulties, but also the rewards of the classroom that a Education course can't teach you because you have to experience it yourself. I'm so glad I got the chance to just observe for a couple semesters to see what kind of teaching practices I would want to use in my classroom, before entering my practicum semester.

I was a babysitter/nanny to my neighbors family for about six years during the summer time period. I watched three children of different ages and genders for 45 hours per week. I focused on tutoring services, and emotional and physical care throughout the years. One of the children I helped also has had an IEP since Pre-School so I would always think of ways to keep her engaged in her school work and would stay patient since I knew it was harder for her to learn new information. I believe this job really sparked my love for teaching and gave me drive to want to become a better teacher.
