May 2013 - Dec 2013
My main priority was to ensure the effectiveness of the paper mill’s water treatment plant which used an activated sludge process to treat effluent from the paper making process before it entered a river. I analysed the organic pollution of the water with quick indicating chemical oxygen demand (COD) testing alongside 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD) titrations. Also I checked levels of water contaminants such as ammonia, nitrates and phosphates, and assessed the water’s other properties such as temperature, suspended solids, pH e.t.c. Other roles I performed around the mill included stocking and cleaning of the laboratory and QC lab, scouring the bioreactor, weekly calibration of emergency showers/eyewash stations, pH probes and hand refractometers, starch and dye quality checking, collating water use figures and data input.
