In Summer 2016 I interned as a research assistant in Samos and Lipsi assisting with scientific research being carried out by Operation Wallacea and Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation. During the time there I became a qualified open water diver by passing the PADI Open Water Diving course. I conducted belt transect surveys on fish and sea grass populations to assess fish biodiversity and determine if Caulerpa taxifolia had spread any further into the Aegean Sea. I also mapped part of the coastal zone using GPS and underwater cameras to assess seagrass populations and regrowth. My knowledge and practice of handling and surveying techniques such as mist netting, capture-mark-recapture and pitfall traps was also improved. I used pitfall traps to capture invertebrates which I then separated into orders. These invertebrates were then sent to Athens University in order to be further classified and used for biodiversity analysis. I assisted with night time terrestrial surveys on chameleons and golden jackals. These were important due to both species being in decline on Samos, especially chameleons, with Samos being home to the last native population in Greece, making helping Archipelagos with the conservation efforts invaluable.
