Thesis title: BMP-4 signaling regulates pigment cell distribution in the axolotl trunk. The aim of this thesis was to study the role of the secreted signaling molecule BMP-4 and its antagonist Noggin, on pigment cell migration using the axolotl as model system. To express BMP-4 or Noggin ectopically in axolotl embryos several methods such as microbead implantation, electroporation and lipofection were tested. In addition, a novel method, the Xenopus animal cap assay, was established that allowed a spatial and temporal controlled induction of protein synthesis and release. Overall grade: Magna cum laude Show less
