Basic Sign Language Instructor
-
Apr 2007 - Apr 2010
I had reservations accepting this job, as it is not culturally appropriate for a non-native signer to teach ASL. However, it was a Deaf supervisor from my internship at the Gallaudet University Regional Center that recruited me to be an instructor for FSLP. Just as I was assured, the vocabulary was extremely basic in nature and there was a great need for instructors at that time. The Massachusetts State Association of the Deaf contracted me to provide in-home basic Sign Language instruction to families with a deaf child under the age of 3 to encourage language acquisition. Classes ranged from two to fifteen students, aging between young children to the elderly. I would not accept another ASL teaching position in the future. Show less

This internship led to continuing to volunteer for the Shared Reading Program and 6 annual Academic Bowls in the Northeast region (plus once in DC for the National Championship!) until I moved to Austin in 2010.
