      Katie is the Partnerships and Projects Coordinator at Sinal do Vale (SINAL), a global learning center for the transition to a sustainable future. SINAL is located in the Atlantic Rainforest 50 km outside of Rio de Janeiro and prototypes solutions for the regeneration of food systems, forests, soils, and communities. Katie coordinates SINAL’s institutional, government, and university partnerships, working closely with director Thais Corral in the development of multi-stakeholder strategies and synergies for community and ecosystem regeneration. Katie is the coordinator of SINAL’s Guanabara Bay Trail project, a 100 km community-based agro-ecotourism trail that connects three restoration hubs, passes through 5 municipalities and 9 protected areas, and serves as a bioregional strategy to catalyze a regenerative economy in the Guanabara Bay region, giving value to environmental assets and overcoming social inequalities. She is also one of the project managers for Madre Frutos, a social enterprise incubated at Sinal do Vale that processes and sells green jackfruit extracted sustainably from agroforests or directly from the Atlantic Forest. Katie also supports in the curriculum design of international and local educational programs focused on leadership. She is also a facilitator for the British Council community-based leadership program, Active Citizens, where she trains local youth in the inner and interpersonal skills needed for implementing sustainability and cultural projects in their communities. Katie also coordinated SINAL’s certification as a Global Ecosphere Retreat from the Long Run Initiative, an international foundation that certifies ecotourism destinations as centers of excellence in sustainability around the 4Cs (Conservation, Community, Commerce, and Culture).
