As part of my year abroad I worked as an English language assistant in two secondary schools in Graz, Austria for British Council. I worked 13 hours a week with students aged between 10 and 19 and during this time my main responsibility was preparing lessons about a variety of topics such as culture and politics in the United Kingdom and effectively communicating these to the students. As a result, I was able to develop my creativity skills specifically on Microsoft PowerPoint and platforms such as Canva and Kahoot, in order to ensure my lessons were visually engaging and interesting. Another key role I performed was helping students with their English pronunciation and grammar, which has improved my communication and listening skills as well as the patience required to repeat any aspects the students were struggling with. Teaching alone at the front of the class also allowed me to practice and improve my confidence and public speaking skills every day, since I had to effectively convey the different aspects of each lesson to ensure the students could get the most out of our lessons together.
