She had been with us for a few years in various capacities and when she graduated college we made a position for her. She was responsible for developing a new program which involved community engagement with a variety of nonprofits and event planning for church youth groups. She was really terrific at coordinating the events and networking with the various nonprofits. One of her greatest strengths was her ability to fine tune the program. Just having a smart set of eyes that could improve each area of the work.

I’ve known Katie Peppers since her freshman year of college. Even then, she took the initiative to address problems that she saw around her. She is passionate about justice and giving people opportunities to develop into productive members of society. Katie has demonstrated leadership during her time as a staff member and volunteer with Cru. During my maternity leave, she led the student leaders with excellence. Katie is creative and visionary. She will take an idea and develop a plan to execute it, involving others along the way.

I volunteer my time to coordinate and be completely responsible for 2 weeks of the seasonal overflow shelter. This responsibility includes, but is not limited to:Volunteer and Staffing coordination - I recruited volunteers to work nightly, helping with guest intake, covid screening, serving food, coordinating showers, etc. I delegate all tasks and responsibilities to the staff and volunteers.Supply/ Donation management - I ensure that we have all of the supplies that we need and make asks for donations from individuals and churches if there are any supply gaps.Food Provisions - I work to ensure that no one goes hungry, meaning that we needed enough food to be donated for 45-65 guests every night.Maintain a calm and safe environment - using de-escalation techniques and other social skills to work towards guests staying calm so they can manage staying in a warm place to sleep.Rule enforcement - when the rules are inevitably broken, I have to be the one to decide on how and when to enforce the rule.Facilities Maintenance - cleaning and maintaining an environment occupied by 45-65 mentally ill, chronically homeless individuals can be a challenge.I was in charge, all shelter decisions run through me. Including when to call EMS, how many guests we were allowing in, when guests needed to be asked to leave, when to send guests to other shelters, etc.I was at the shelter every night, Dec 14-27, from 6pm to midnight (at least) to prepare the shelter to open and leave it in the hands of the night staff. Then I was also on call for the rest of the night. Show less
