CSIRO works with more than 3,000 organisations each year for a total value of more than $500M. I was part of a small team focused on future growth options and commercial activities. In my role I provided strategic market and business analysis to aid better decision making. I worked directly with senior science and business leaders to provide high quality advice. In particular, my role involved: - Supporting senior leaders in development of science and business strategy. I generally supported the front end of the strategy process, including through identifying strategic options based on market analysis and advising on the best decision making framework to apply. In some cases I worked side by side with senior leaders throughout the process as a sounding board and trusted advisor - Developing targeted market analysis to assist leaders to prioritise their research portfolio, inform commercialisation planning and new client targeting. I prepared this using secondary market research on industries and technologies; however there was a significant element of creativity required to understand the commercial potential, as many of the research areas and innovation CSIRO is thinking about now will take years to be market-ready. I was able to 'switch gears' quite dramatically and rapidly immerse myself in an unfamiliar industry or technology - Development of value added business analysis and high level business cases to help inform our Executive Team and CEO. I took ambiguous ideas and converted them into real options - Driving forward high priority initiatives or improvements - doing whatever it takes to achieve a given outcome. This included coordination between functions, planning, or working as part of a team to develop a finished product. People came to me when something needed to be done right and/or done quickly - I built a reputation for delivery.

My experience included: - Project management for the implementation of activity based costing - Change management, influencing and communications for an operational excellence program - Designing and implementing improved operational performance reporting processes and formats - Contributing to the development of an innovation strategy, process and systems for multiple organisations. I worked with clients in sectors spanning oil and gas, higher education, electricity transmission and distribution and financial services. In some cases I worked as part of a large consulting team, in others I worked directly with the client on a one on one basis. I was consistently recognised as a high performer and was promoted on an accelerated timeframe. I was also nominated for Deloitte's national awards. I also co-developed and delivered an internal training program on Excel, with a particular focus on usability and effective design of Excel data and charts.

GESB is the superannuation fund for the WA Public Sector. I joined GESB as a graduate analyst and rapidly gained exposure via a variety of roles within the marketing and product management team. This was a period of significant change for the organisation and I worked with extremely capable marketing professionals and learned an enormous amount. During my time at GESB I was primarily supporting delivery of marketing objectives or activities through: - The development of a framework for ongoing product, competitor and market analysis. I regularly summarised recent competitor activity and other external trends to the Board and Executive team - Contribution to strategic marketing planning. I made a strong contribution to strategic marketing planning, product planning and improvement and led the development of the online channel strategy - Assistance with customer analysis, segmentation and predictive behaviour analysis - Assistance with measuring marketing campaign effectiveness - Development of digital marketing and communications including assisting with redevelopment of the public website and intranet. I also worked directly with GESB's CEO to prepare external presentations and speeches and provide compelling market analysis or evidence to substantiate key arguments. Upon leaving GESB I had a strong understanding of the professional marketing and product management function and wanted to build on this through greater exposure to broader business issues and activities via management consulting.
