The class topic Towards Regenerative Cities – Governance of the Urban Metabolism aimed to turn the current urban model based on a linear system, where resources flows enter the cities, are consumed and waste discharged, into a regenerative city where flows are circular, promoting conscious consumption and recycling, reduction of waste and pollution, establishing healthy relations with cities’ hinterlands, guaranteeing more livable spaces and ensuring a better future for the new generations. The concept of urban metabolism has evolved over the last decades as the holistic study of urban water, energy, and material flows. It provides a helpful knowledge base for working towards regenerative cities. By working in small groups, the students analyzed an specific city and a theme of their choice. With a view to enhance regenerative capacities of cities, they explored urban facts and figures, identified key problems and potential solutions under the concept of urban metabolism, and analyzed strategic urban governance processes, always bearing in mind specific local conditions and needs. The main target of the project was to learn about the complex interaction of key actors, instruments, and procedures in sustainable urban development.Supervisors: Cathrin Zengerling & Ana Strastil

    • Urban-LEDS Project for the City of Fortaleza (ICLEI) - Associated Consultant
      • Jun 2014 - Sep 2015

The project Promoting Low Emission Urban Development Strategies in Emerging Economy Countries (Urban-LEDS) had the objective to enhance the transition to low emission urban development in these kind of nations. In general, the aim is the integration of low-carbon strategies into all sectors of urban planning and development: by understanding the reasons why the transition to a low carbon economy is crucial to face the problems in the current global context; have a close relationship with the multiple stakeholders involved in the process; analyze the potential of low carbon actions that can be integrated into city level activities, looking forward to planning and designing a resilient and sustainable city in the future and collaborating with the city's Environment Secretary on setting reduction goals on GHG emissions. The duration was from 2012 to 2016, the funding mechanism was the European Union and the implementing partners UN-Habitat and ICLEI. 8 model cities and 21 satellite cities were selected in 4 countries (Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa). Fortaleza was one of the model cities in Brazil. The city had it first GHG emissions inventory in 2012, which provided the base for tackling the sectors of transportation, energy, waste and construction. My collaboration was more focus on understanding the city status quo, limitations, challenges and current projects regarding transportation in order to suggest financial, social and urban viable mitigation strategies to the local government. Example of the solutions achieved to reduce CO2 emissions are: bicycle sharing system, car sharing system, bio-diesel for public buses, bicycle lanes and exclusive bus lanes. The final report was the Low Carbon Emissions Plan for the City of Fortaleza.
