    • Penguin Keeper
      • Mar 2012 - Jan 2015

As a penguin keeper, I had the care and feeding of 20 little penguins (Eudyptula minor) as part of a team of three. These penguins were all rescued birds judged unable to survive in the wild after rehabilitation was completed. There were a range of injuries and care requirements needed to keep the birds comfortable and content in a captive environment. As these birds were on display to the general public, I was continually on hand to answer questions as I went about the daily cleaning required, and gave an ongoing and informative commentary to viewers of the twice daily penguin feeding.

As a Shuttle Driver I was tasked with the movement of passengers in a safe and timely manner. These activities took place in an extreme environment, on both Ross Island and on the sea ice/permanent ice shelf. This involved the constant use of a handheld radio, using several different vehicle types, depending on passenger numbers and weather conditions. I also performed dispatching duties and the scheduling of projected vehicle use depending on passenger and air craft movements. When scheduled as Airfield Taxi, I oversaw and organized passenger and aircrew movements at the airfield in a safe and efficient manner. I was head hunted to go back down again as a Shuttle Driver (Nov 2012 to Feb 2013) as a contractor with Lockheed-Martin and the management at the International Antarctic Centre were able to give me a leave of absence.
