  During winter and summer school breaks, I work as a mental health counselor at Alternatives Unlimited Inc.. As a mental health counselor I am working with our 120 individuals who experience mental health problems on various aspects of their daily lives. This can include budgeting, time management, exercise, nutrition, activities of daily living, among many others. I help to plan and execute events for our individuals including movie nights, day trips, and dinners in order to promote community involvement. The mission of Alternatives Unlimited is to allow for individuals with disabilities to become involved members of our communities. Through work on activities of daily living as well as rehab meeting to assist individuals in their mental health recovery, we help the people we serve to live full, meaningful lives as contributing members of society. My position also entails that I advocate for the individuals I serve whether it be in search of homeless shelters, food pantries, or with receiving medical services. Show less

  At the Windham Center Elementary School in Windham, CT I served as clinical student through the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. Through this position I spent one full school day a week in a first grade general education classroom. Through observations and working hands on with the students I was able to gain a better perspective as to how special education students are integrated into the general education session. I assisted my cooperating teacher with grading assignments, direct instruction, creating instructional bulletin boards, attending Program and Placement Team meetings, among other responsibilities. I also created and implemented a lesson about the layers of the earth using direct instruction methods.
