In 2007 we were asked to undertake the conservation and redecoration of the Grand Staircase in the Royal Institution. This work necessitated close liaison with Katharine St Paul as Collections Curator, with in-house responsibility for all object conservation work, and as the key link between the architects and the project’s building contractors. Our specific work required us to be working in–situ for a significant part of the project, during which time it also necessitated us to have a clean and exceptionally organised environment. Given the enormous amount of different trades on site, this required very careful planning and scheduling, which Katharine fulfilled admirably. It was clear to me that Katharine was not only well informed of the complexity of managing conservation within a much larger and detailed building project, but also prepared to actively defend the conservation requirements when pressured by the main contractors to modify the agreed plans to suit their programme needs. Owing in a large part to Katharine’s diligence, professionalism and communication skills, we completed the work on schedule, which, without her careful management and affable nature, we would never have been able to do.

In my role as Group Visual Project Manager I was honoured to collaborate with Katharine on projects over a four year period from 2015 to 2019 at Newell Brands. Katharine was employed as the Fine Writing Senior Curator and Archivist, she has superb attention to detail and a very creative eye. She is dedicated to her role and goes over and beyond on all her projects. She ensured that the range of museum objects and products were boldly presented on brand, in an innovative and dynamic way, yet uncluttered and with clear historical information. Two noteworthy projects were the Travelling Exhibition in 2015/16 and new exhibition for the Fine Writing Museum in 2018. Katharine briefed me to assist in the design of a ‘Traveling Exhibition’ display, showcasing the craftsmanship, design and heritage of the Parker Collection. The budget was limited and the furniture needed to be compact, lockable and secure during it’s global travels. The cabinet comprised of a enclosed display top and four accessible drawers. This was planned for exclusive UK launch at Harrods followed by presentations in China and Japan; success ensured additional bookings in Korea and two locations in New York City. The Royal Warrant, Royal Family and Parker concept was so unique that this exhibition lasted over a two year period, the return on investment was excellent. We collaborated on the Parker Museum re-launch, presenting objects and luxury pens by theme, event and manufacture location to successfully feature craftmanship, quality and innovation. Katharine provided me with an excellent brief in order to work on the Parker Pen museum collection, updating the presentation to incorporate the new brand identity, themes and style. Most of the objects were presented on the new brand perspex mounts which featured the Parker arrow design. However Katharine conceptualised bespoke displays for a number of items including the iconic Parker Jotter display and the elegant 1900 premium Duofold Snake range. Katharine is knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with, she shares information really well and made working together easy and enjoyable!

    • Icon ACR Accreditation
      • Jan 2009 - Oct 2009

Successively completed ACR Accreditation with Institute of Conservation (ICON) in 2009. Becoming an Accredited Conservator-Restorer (ACR) demonstrates to clients, employers and peers that an individual has an in-depth knowledge of conservation, a high degree of competence, sound judgement and a deep understanding of the principles which underpin their practice, by showing that they are proficient across Icon’s professional standards in conservation. The Icon Accreditation assessment is a demanding and rigorous process which reflects the high level of competence and professionalism required of conservator-restorers. It is designed to be of an equivalent standard to the assessment processes in other professions, including the chartered professions. It is therefore likely to require a significant investment of time and commitment from applicants to undertake. Show less

Working on the museums curatorial and collections management aspects, mainly involving the project management of the refurbishment of the museum. Set within a modern building and a corporate business. Working on redevelopment of the museum, including the movement of items on and off-site, conservation, budgets, plans and policies. Worked on achieving Museum Accreditation for the museum, which was successful and applying for public funding. The re-housing project of 20,000 objects started in August 2002 - to March 2004, in preparation for the opening of a new museum space. During the project, I managed four members of staff and the volunteer team. For part of the time, I covered the role of the Head of Museum, while this post was vacant to ensure the continuation and success of the project. I worked with external consultants such as the architects, museum designers and builders to set standards and ensure the completion of the redevelopment. Produced documents for the forecast of the Collection and budgets. I implemented an Audience Development Plan, to recommend ways of making the museum more accessible to the profession and to non-specialist audiences. It also identifies ways of improving and developing the services to visitors. Show less
