There are not enough positive adjectives which exist in any language of man to truly expand upon Ms. Shilcutt's vision, expert opinion, and culinary genius. Suffice it to say that she serves the city of Houston well in her understanding, her writing, and her thought process as she shines a light on dining in a way that resonates with her readers and is at once both an exposition as well as an adventure - the best part is, she brings us along for the ride with every write-up. It is my firm belief that Ms. Shilcutt is one of the driving forces as to why our city has shone on the national stage - because one need not go far on a digital search to know it is her words that grace us with an insight to a chef, restaurant, movement, or cuisine. She cuts through trends and fads and knows how to address food as it should be addressed - with passion, thought, wit, care, and the ever-sharp eye for discerning. This absolutely thorough analysis of our city's culinary collections is why others far and wide have paid attention to Houston as a true dining mecca, and I, like so many citizens in Houston, are indebted to her for being one of the first to realize how wonderful our city's rich food scene is, and to take that scene and elevate it to a way of life that we can embrace, enjoy, and spread to others.

Wrote all restaurant reviews for the city’s alt-weekly. Won awards for nationally-read coverage of Houston as the up-and-coming next great food city. Reported on everything from local battles over legal food truck locations and restaurant parking ordinances to statewide concerns about beef prices and cattle futures during the 2012 Texas drought. Wrote consistently viral content including much-debated op-ed pieces such as “Has the ‘Foodie’ Backlash Begun?” Articles were republished in annual “Best Food Writing” anthologies in 2012 and 2013, and routinely included in such national food coverage as Eater’s annual “Most Scathing Restaurant Reviews,” perhaps prompting Eater to write the following headline upon my departure: “Holy F***ing S***!! Katharine Shilcutt Resigning From the Houston Press, Heading to Houstonia.” Show less

Hired to help a formerly print-only newsroom adapt to a new digital platform, supporting seasoned journalists in blogging style, technique and CMS use while also monitoring and encouraging pageviews through weekly traffic reports. Planned and executed viral content across desks (news, music and food) and assisted other journalists with incorporating digital media into their work. Created and maintained multiple Houston Press Twitter accounts for the paper and its primary blogs; also created and maintained Facebook accounts for the same. Show less

Prior to 2009, I was a freelance writer who wrote for the Houston Press and Houstonist. By day I worked in human resources, beginning 2003 at Paychex, Inc. I later moved to Integrated Electrical Services, Inc. and finished my HR career at CEMEX after a series of promotions in benefit plan management (e.g., medical, dental and 401k plans) while freelancing and running my own food blog, She Eats.
