Ikon Gallery is an international public art gallery based in Birmingham, founded in 1965 and registered educational charity. Dir. Jonathan Watkins 1999 - 2022 My main duties as the bookshop assistant are as follows: Management and ordering of stock including processing orders and invoices. Handling, condition checking and selling of limited edition print and sculpture including preparing items for travel and keeping in communication with customers and enquiries. Training new members of staff on the shop and reception systems clearly and openly. Formal stocktake processes. Visual merchandising and promotion taking into account an understanding of trends and seasonal popularity Having a reliable and extensive knowledge of Ikon’s history and archive. Regularly sharing reception duties with the Front of House staff. Specifically, during the pandemic, they adapted to be as follows: While being open during the pandemic the shop staff became very adaptable and flexible with their official role. Often taking on additional reception and ticketing duties while simultaneously managing our shop which had limited access at the time, requiring handling of stock and communication with visitors. The environment of being open during the pandemic was very changeable so being adaptable to assist in the running of the business in any way could prove to be very effective. Briefing and managing visitors in ever-changing government and organisational guidelines. Monitoring and feeding back visitor experience in regards to safety guidelines and the constantly updating risk assessment. Show less

      • Oct 2020 - Jan 2021

I was commissioned to design the branding for the Stirchley Snowflake Festival 2020. "The programme, supported by Arts Council England, has been designed with community at its core. Without your snowflakes and your taking part we’d just be a couple of crazy ladies talking about the Snow Queen on the high street (and we’ve been asked to stop doing that). Together, we can build something that celebrates each other and brings a little magic to the end of a very strange year." Ten Acres of Sound was a festival of noise, sound, sonic art, music, performance, whatever located within Stirchley, Birmingham. Artists were invited to make site-responsive works to be exhibited throughout the area and performers were asked to bring their work from all over Stirchley as a series of gigs or street events. It was initially intended to go ahead in April 2020 but had to be postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Adapting to new conditions, it now takes the form of online, outdoor and postal events, with installations still in some venues in Stirchley. While much of Stirchley is still closed and under partial lock-down, the festival still consists of 6 site-responsive works, ranging from soundwalks to megaphone installations; 9 online performances from Birmingham artists and beyond; 5 workshops, where residents of Stirchley or further afield can take part in group sound-making, try out different recording techniques or make their own instruments. Alongside this we have a radio hour to showcase the rich outputs of all the artists and musicians involve and featuring interviews with them all and a special edition of our local quiz based entirely on noise. Ten Acres of Sound was devised by Artefact Projects, a co-operative artspace on the high street of Stirchley, and aimed at aligning concerns around gentrification, locality, climate justice and social relations. The work actually presented in this new re-worked festival has a more or less oblique or implicit relationship to these concerns. The aim of this website is to present as much as possible of what was originally intended for the festival in its transfigured, documented and digitised format. Show less

  • Cross City Zine
    • Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
    • Program Coordinator
      • May 2018 - Aug 2018

With Katie Stafford. The Zine aims to work with artists, local communities, passengers, and places of the Lichfield-Redditch Cross City Train Line to produce content that takes the art out of the traditional gallery setting. CROSS CITY ZINE compiles visual art and text from artists who live and work in the different locations along the train line. Independently published, the zine will be redistributed back into trains and platforms, surreptitiously left for passengers to find and read during their journeys. CROSS CITY ZINE aims to distribute the artwork and create a platform for discovering and showcasing artists. The zine will tap into the potential of the train line as a space where an audience of passengers can encounter contemporary art in an unexpected setting. The artists featured in the first issue were invited to submit work through an open call for submissions. They include current BA and MA students, recent graduates, and professionally practising artists working across performance, film, photography, illustration, printmaking, sculpture, digital, poetry and spoken word. CROSS CITY ZINE has worked with artist-led printing and bookbinding workshop The Holodeck to produce 200 two-colour risograph printed copies of the first issue. Its publication has been funded by the generous supporters of our Crowdfunder campaign. Show less
