Katey oversaw the growth and evolution of Next Top Makers to Futureworks Incubator - scaling the program from supporting six NYC-based startups per year to 80+. She has adapted and applied the community-sourced incubator model in a multitude of contexts and programs including Futureworks Shops, helping leaders at prototyping hubs and small manufacturing facilities to become more sustainable and entrepreneur-friendly, helping cleantech companies get to market faster by easing the pain of manufacturing through M-Corps, supporting social innovators in SWFL and supporting the growth of small businesses in Battle Creek. Katey has overseen the tripling of the NYC team and recently expanded the hub to include additional cities and teammates across the US. She is particularly passionate about opening up and creating space and access to capital for women and black and brown founders which will ultimately lead to a redistribution of wealth. In her time at SecondMuse, she has led several national and global hackathons including National Day of Civic Hacking and NASA Space Apps Challenge which each engaged over 10,000 participants. She is also a founding author of the Needfinding for Internet Freedom framework which helps tool developers apply principles of human centered design to build safer, more effective internet security tools. She introduced a companywide mentorship and onboarding process and has been particularly keen to explore and build team culture in both the virtual and place-based environment.
