I assisted two veterinarians in their research trial for a vaccine for Clostridium Perfingens in chickens. I assisted in the care and handling of the birds, setting up the experimental conditions, performing cultures and preparing the vaccines, and assisting in necropsy by collecting and culturing samples and recording notes as the procedure was occurring.

Independent Study and Research in the Histology Laboratory. Work involved the processing of necropsy tissues for histologic evaluation by embedding in wax, slicing the samples using a microtome, and preparation of slides and histological stains. Special Staining work was also done upon request. Research involved creating a staining technique that combined the principles of the Hemotoxylin & Eosin stain and the Prussian Blue Staining technique for iron identification. The technique was applied to a variety of species in all classes to test for continuity in the stain's effectiveness across species. Show less

Thyroid hormone research to determine homeostatic ranges for the 5 thyroid hormones in Pre-Clinical species using mass spectrometry. Experimental preparations of samples to determine proper volumes of serum and organic compounds, and technique for best results upon experimental mass spectrometry analysis. Pre-clinical species evaluated included New Zealand White rabbits, mice, Sprague Dawley and Wistar Rats, Beagles, and Rhesus Monkeys. Following preparation and experimental processing using mass spectrometry, results were adjusted to account for machine error, and the data was organized and quantified using Excel Software. Research compiled overtime was compared, evaluated, and presented as a poster at the Pfizer Annual Student Researcher Presentation Exhibition. Show less
