Heights District Neighborhood Coalition
-
Vancouver, Washington, United States
-
Co Chairman
-
Mar 2020 - Dec 2021
Founded the Heights District Neighborhood Coalition to bring together 7 neighborhoods to address issues regarding a proposed mixed-use development to be built adjacent to the neighborhoods. Recruited a team of 57 volunteers to participate in 4 different committees that all advocated for neighborhoods' priorities regarding the proposed development. Developed strong relationships with city leaders and was seen as a crucial stakeholder in the project. Worked with City Planners and City Council members to successfully negotiate the following modifications to the development plans: o Protected 5 local churches from being rezoned, sold and converted to high-density mixed use. o Cooperatively developed a tiered parking ratio for high and mid density areas with sidewalks, and low density areas without sidewalks, which resulted in safer, more equitable neighborhood streets. o Achieved compatible maximum building height for land parcel located in a single-story neighborhood. Organized community's 2021 Vancouver Mayoral and City Council Candidate Forum attended by more than 75 residents. Strategically planned a written and verbal testimony campaign for the Planning Commission and City Council that received positive attention from city leaders. Published an Op-Ed and countless Letters to the Editor in The Columbian newspaper to raise awareness on the impact of the new development. Organized all community meeting invitations, agendas and necessary materials to effectively and efficiently present City Council and Planning Commission meeting summaries, interpretations and analyses. Ensured proposed policies were in conformance with all adopted plans, documents and municipal codes by liaising with local Land Use attorneys revising proposed policies as necessary. Show less
