      • Sep 2019 - Present

In my current position, I am responsible for teaching/delivering 1-1 Literacy, Numeracy and SEAL to pupils from Primary age to 18 years. Pupils who attend Slindon College have learning difficulties such as dyslexia, autism and/or social and emotional issues. A variety of teaching methods and activities are used for each individual, including multi-sensory approaches and literacy programmes such as Alpha to Omega and IDL. Other responsibilities include monitoring and assessing students' progress, contacting parents, creating resources, and writing ILPs and reports (i.e. for CAMHS, where applicable). Show less

    • Head of Secondary Learning Support
      • Aug 2016 - Jun 2019

The Sultan’s School is a leading bilingual school in Oman, offering an Arabic-English curriculum for pupils in kindergarten to Year 13. My first responsibility was to determine the support needs across the Secondary Department and I created the Additional Support Register by analysing data from standardised testing (CAT4 and NGRT) data for students in Years 7-13. Other responsibilities included promoting inclusive learning within the school and parent community, facilitating screening assessments and examination accommodations, and recommending cognitive-educational assessments. My duties included writing IEPs and a ‘whole school’ SEN policy, monitoring student progress and allocating in-class support wherever possible. I provided English and EAL lessons for scholars, general support for Year 11 students who were on academic probation and 1-1 intervention for students who have dyslexia and autism. I was in regular contact with all teaching staff, parents and outside agencies, including medical clinics, educational psychologists and paediatricians. I attended several excellent CPD events in Dubai and Qatar. I was involved in local community programmes, including the Oman Down Syndrome Centre and a children’s oncology ward. I was a member of the ‘Eco Club’ and enjoyed helping to promote ideas about recycling and reusable plastics within the local community. We were the first school in the Middle East to gain the ‘Green Flag’ award. Show less

    • Key Stage 4 Teacher/Unit Manager
      • Jul 2012 - Jul 2016

My main responsibilities were to manage the school’s provision at Chichester College and to coordinate and teach Key Stage 4 English. I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the unit which included managing the students’ timetables, arranging work experience placements, organising local charity events and preparing students for their transition to post-16. Students were working towards gaining four English qualifications, depending on their individual needs and learning levels: GCSE, Living Texts Level 1/2, Entry Level and Functional Skills. The majority of the students in my form group were looked after children and subsequently I was also responsible for writing reports for CAMHS, Social Services, speech and language therapists, and for attending multi-agency meetings on behalf of my school for the students in my form group. • Sep 2009 - 2012

Initially, and during my first year of studying on my PGCE course, I taught Performing Arts (Personal Development Skills programme) to young adults with severe and complex learning difficulties and disabilities. This role was a wonderful opportunity, largely because – with no syllabus to follow - I was working from a ‘blank page’. My scheme of work included several weeks devoted to looking at traditional culture, music, costume and dance from different countries. During the last few weeks of term, I filmed our production of ‘Joseph’, which we presented to the whole department on our last day and this was particularly rewarding for me. From September 2010, I relocated to the Brinsbury Campus to teach English GCSE/Entry Level/Functional Skills and Personal & Social Development to students aged 14-16, while completing my PGCE. These students were permanently excluded from mainstream education due to significant learning, emotional, social and behaviour difficulties. Show less
